Mr. Edward Akol
AUDITOR GENERAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA & CHAIR INTOSAI WGEI
What is WGEI
Background
The INTOSAI Working Group on Audit of Extractive Industries (WGEI) was established by the INTOSAI Congress in October 2013 to study the extractive industries (EI) and develop guidance and best practice.
This was in a bid to address the challenges Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) face in auditing the EI.
The scope of the WGEI covers oil, gas and solid minerals. For more information see – Report on the Role of SAIs in EI
Goal of the WGEI
The Working Group strives to promote the audit of extractive industries within the INTOSAI community in order to promote good governance and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
For more information on the goal and objectives of the WGEI – see WGEI Terms of References.
The Working Group on Audit of Extractive Industries currently has 46 members from all five INTOSAI regions. Membership is voluntary and open to SAIs with expertise, experience and (or) interest in extractive industries. The Working Group may invite observer membership from related industries, bodies and organisations. The WGEI has 2 observers.

The Community of Practice is an operational tool to achieve the WGEI objectives, and a platform for interaction both within and beyond INTOSAI. The CoP links WGEI with the extractive industry community outside INTOSAI. The objective of the CoP is to strengthen SAIs’ role in fostering accountability and transparency in Extractive Industries, in line with the overall objective of the WGEI. The CoP is headed by a CoP Coordinator who manages its activities.
